Kids and kids at heart will get the chance to see fire trucks and get their picture taken with first responders and members of the military Friday in downtown Port Huron.

A Little Something, located at 205 Huron Ave., is holding Ice Cream with a Fireman on July 1 during First Fridays, a monthly event centered around downtown Port Huron businesses.

Quay Street between Military Street and Black River Beauty Bar will be closed for First Fridays from 1 to 9 p.m., the ice cream event runs from 5 to 8 p.m.

A Little Something co-manager Lucie DeLine said the event will include the chance to see emergency vehicles up close and to meet and take photos with members of the Port Huron fire and police departments, as well as members of the U.S. Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

The first 200 kids to attend will receive free ice cream, courtesy of sponsors Bob Crosby of Crosby Law, PLLC and Rusty Fournier of Allstate Insurance. There will also be games and face painting.

"It should be a fun evening," DeLine.

DeLine said the event had a good turnout when A Little Something held it in 2019. They wanted to make it annual event, however the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the event's return until now.

“We’re very excited to bring it back, and it’s nice to incorporate it with First Fridays," DeLine said.

Port Huron Fire Chief Corey Nicholson said events such as Ice Cream with a Fireman gives the fire department an outlet for positive interactions with the public, which is important because firefighters are usually interacting with people in less-than-ideal circumstances

July's First Friday is themed KidsFest!, and will include games, coloring and family-friendly activities at other downtown businesses.

Natacha Hayden, Port Huron’s Downtown Development Authority director, said while some First Friday themes have attracted more people than others, businesses have enjoyed the monthly events so far.

"The goal is to have something extra fun happening in downtown Port Huron regularly," Hayden said. "The downtown businesses want to welcome the community regularly, and providing special things like this will do just that."

Hayden said August's theme will be Dog Days of Summer, where businesses will be dog friendly and display goodies such as dog treats. September is Sweet Stroll, where vendors will sell sweet treats.
