Kids Will Get To Experience Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story” In The Form Of A Book

From stellar speaking engagements at prestigious universities like Harvard to full-fleshed out college courses, there’s no denying hip-hop is inevitably required reading. With its powerful social-political message, it’s also creating a presence in early education.

Enter Slick Rick’s legendary “Children’s Story,” that is being re-imagined into a kids book. The passage will make its debut alongside the re-release of the rapper’s classic 1988 album, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick on April 22, Okayplayer reports.

The book, distributed by record label and online retailer Get on Down, contains 18 pages. The pictures inside are reportedly going to mirror the images that the NYC native paints within the song.

“When it comes to Rick and his tales, though, the smash single “Children’s Story” is perhaps his best, recited to this day by fans and MCs in training as a rite of passage,” states Get on Down via their website of the forthcoming project. “Just hearing the opening lines begins a sing-along that can quickly fill a room: ‘Once upon a time / Not long ago / When people wore pajamas / And lived life slow…’ Rick’s lines from the song are re-created in visual form in an 18-page book with a puffy cover – presented like a legit children’s book, thick pages and all. From the little boy who was misled to the tense police chase, to the unsure children hearing the story from their ‘Uncle Ricky,’ this is the most unique way the story has ever been presented.”

Until the release of the book and album, for memories sake revisit the original video for Rick’s “Children Story.”
