Khalid Talks Crossing Over Into Country Music at the 2019 ACM Awards (Exclusive)
Khalid is getting a warm welcome at the 2019 ACM Awards!
The 21-year-old singer was on hand to perform the chart-topping remix to "Saturday Nights" alongside Kane Brown. And while on the red carpet, he chatted with ET’s Nancy O’Dell about breaking into the country music world.
"I never would have imagined being at the ACMs, and it’s a blessing. It’s so cool, and not many artists get to say that they get to crossover … and the country world has embraced me with just arms wide open," he stated, beaming. "They been so nice to me, so it’s really good to be here."
Prior to that, he discussed the appeal of his hit-making collaboration with Brown, saying, "I think about the remix with Kane Brown, that’s a country song to me. And our voices meshed so well, so it’s so cool to see two different, completely different, worlds come together, and the balance is just amazing. It works well."
The young singer also talked with O’Dell about his first visit as an adult to Las Vegas, where the awards show is being held this year, and being able to enjoy everything Sin City has to offer.
"This is my first time being in Vegas being 21, and it’s crazy," he admitted. "I got here last night and I went straight to sleep after the rehearsal, but tonight I’m definitely going to enjoy Vegas and I’m going to have some fun."
Before hitting the town, Khalid first hit the stage with Brown for their live performance of their genre-bending collaboration, which proved to be a stellar showcase for both stars' vocal talents and undeniable charm.
Brown took the stage solo, at first, to sing his single "Good as You," before Khalid joined him to deliver their vibrant remix of "Saturday Nights," in front of the warm and welcoming country music crowd.
Prior to rehearsals on Saturday, ET spoke with Brown, who revealed that it was Khalid who first reached out to him to propose they work together. And he chose a very special day to do so!
"Khalid came to me actually on my wedding day. I was getting ready for my wedding, and he asked me if I wanted to get on a song with him, so I got two surprises in one day," Brown explained, joking about his wife Katelyn Jae saying, "I do."
