Kevin Spacey to Host 2017 Tony Awards

Is there no American institution that Frank Underwood won’t worm his way into?!

Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) will host the 2017 Tony Awards, CBS announced Tuesday.

The Tony-, Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning actor will emcee the live telecast on Sunday, June 11, at 8/7c. It will be Spacey’s first time hosting the ceremony.

“I was their second choice for Usual Suspects, fourth choice for American Beauty and 15th choice to host this year’s Tony Awards,” the actor joked in a statement. “I think my career is definitely going in the right direction. Maybe I can get shortlisted to host the Oscars if everyone else turns it down.”

Spacey took home the Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play Tony in 1991 for his performance in Lost in Yonkers. In addition to his screen and stage work, Spacey served as artistic director of The Old Vic Theatre Company in London for more than a decade.

This year’s Tony nominations will be announced on Tuesday, May 2.

Even though it’s his inaugural Tonys, Spacey has rather large jazz shoes to fill: The 2016 broadcast, hosted by The Late Late Show host/musical theater vet James Corden, earned the ceremony its best ratings in 15 years.
