Oscar winner Kevin Spacey has been charged with four counts of sexual assault involving three men in the UK. In a statement, Rosemary Ainslie, head of the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service Special Crime Division, said the charges authorized follow an investigation by London’s Metropolitan Police.

The criminal charges authorized against Spacey by the CPS today include “one charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.”

The 62-year-old actor was originally accused of sexual harassment and unwanted advances by multiple people in 2017.

In its statement, the CPS outlined the charges as four offenses “of sexual assault, contrary to section 3(1) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003” and one offense “of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent, contrary to sections 4(1) and (4) of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.”

Per the CPS, two of the incidents alleged by “complainant 1” took place in London in March 2005, while “complainant 2” alleges the offenses happened in August 2008, also in London. A third complainant alleges a sexual assault took place in Gloucestershire in April 2013.

Spacey was artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theatre from 2003-2015. In November 2017, the storied company said it had received 20 allegations of inappropriate behavior against the star after an investigation. Spacey has been largely out of the public eye since 2017, although two projects featuring him have been on sale here at the Cannes Film Market.

In its statement today, the Crown Prosecution Service said its assessment of any case “is not a finding of fact, which can only be made by a court, but rather an assessment of what it might be possible to prove to a court, in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors.”

The service also said it “reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Spacey are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.”
