Remember Tusk, the 2014 Kevin Smith movie in which Michael Parks tries to turn Justin Long into a walrus? It wasn’t exactly a success, but that hasn’t stopped Smith from wanting to create a sequel.
In a recent interview with SlashFilm, Long revealed Smith’s desire to make Tusk 2, saying, “He texted us all the other day, [co-stars] Haley [Joel Osment] and Genesis [Rodriguez], and he told us that he wanted to do it, and I thought it was a joke. And then I realized he was being serious. And then one of the [other] interviewers said, ‘Yeah, he said the same to me.'”
Smith first teased Tusk 2 back in 2020 on a Twitch stream, during which the filmmaker said Long’s character Wallace would essentially take over the late Parks’ role as the walrus maker.
“There’s a version of Tusk 2 that you do where… you cut to the present, and somebody else gets sucked into the spider’s web,” Smith said. “The house, you hear stories, and when you get to the house, the new Howard Howe is Wallace, who has gotten out of the walrus trappings and stuff and is obviously disturbed by his entire ordeal and is now doing it to others. So there’s a way to do Tusk 2 where Justin becomes Michael Parks’ character. Wallace becomes, sort of, the new Howard Howe.”
Kevin Smith did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Tusk made a measly $1.9 million at the box office despite its $3 million budget and received mixed reviews from critics. The film holds a 45% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Erik Lundegaard of The Seattle Times called it “the most disgusting and pointless movie I’ve seen” in his zero-star review. Elsewhere in the world of Smith sequels is Clerks III, which is out in September. The film will only be shown in 700 theaters on September 13th and 15th, prompting the filmmaker to screen the project in the traveling roadshow “Clerks III: The Convenience Tour.”
Smith also recently spoke up about the craziness that is Warner Bros. Discovery, criticizing the company for killing its Batgirl movie while doubling down on releasing The Flash despite Ezra Miller’s mounting controversies.
