Kevin McCarthy has had his wife Judy McCarthy by his side since the start of his political career.

Kevin and Judy have been married for over 30 years and are parents to two children, Connor and Meghan, together. While Judy has mostly stayed out of the spotlight, she has been supportive of her husband over the years.

When he was elected to be the House Majority Leader in 2014, Judy told The Bakersfield Californian it was a “humbling” moment for their family.

"We didn't take it lightly. In one day, your responsibilities are greater, and it is humbling," Judy said. "But someone had that office before Kevin, and someone will after. You keep your family first and don't look at this as some glamor thing.”

She added, “You are serving, the people elected you to be a servant, you have to have a servant heart."

After 15 rounds of voting, Kevin was elected as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in January 2023, but was ousted from his position nine months later. Democrats sided with Republicans in a historic recall 216-210 vote, stripping Kevin of his role.

The efforts to oust Kevin were led by far-right Republicans who had been looking for reasons to relieve him of his duties since he was elected.

So who is Kevin McCarthy’s wife? Here’s everything to know about Judy McCarthy and her relationship with the politician.

She is from California

Judy grew up in Frazier Park, California, as the youngest of four children. As of 2014, her parents still lived there.

"My dad is the perfect example of hard work,” Judy told The Bakersfield Californian. “He worked for National Cement. I didn't grow up wealthy, but we have a very close family, and my foundation of faith came from my mother."

Judy and Kevin met while they were still students at Bakersfield High School — the same school their children would later attend. They were in biology class together when Kevin was attempting to woo Judy, even though her interests were elsewhere at the time.

"I actually liked one of his friends, but you know, Kevin's personality wins you over, and he doesn't give up," Judy said in her interview with The Bakersfield Californian.

The family never fully left Bakersfield, continuing to own their home even when they made the move to Washington, D.C. when Kevin started working in the federal government.

Three years after graduating from California State University, Bakersfield, Kevin tied the knot with Judy on Aug. 29, 1992. On his 23rd wedding anniversary, he posted a sweet tribute to his wife on Facebook.

“I've fallen in love many times... Always with you,” he wrote in the caption. “Happy Anniversary to my amazing wife Judy!”

Soon after getting married, the couple welcomed their first child together, son Connor McCarthy, in 1994. Two years later, Judy gave birth to their second child, a daughter named Meghan.

While Connor was a student at Georgetown University, Kevin invited him to some events at the White House, including a Japan state dinner in 2015 as a reward for being studious.

“I took him to dinner last night and I said, ‘I have this thing at the White House, do you want to go?’ ” he told The Hill at the time. “This is his last week of finals. I wanted to make sure he had all his homework.”

Six years later, Kevin announced that his son got married. The former Speaker posted Connor’s wedding video on his Instagram, sharing that he tied the knot to the “love of his life” in December 2020.

“My son married the love of his life in December—and though the wedding was small, the love we have for them could not be bigger. ❤️,” he wrote in the caption. “I’m a very proud dad!”

When Meghan was young, she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Judy shared with The Bakersfield Californian how she used to drive south for her treatments.

"She has had her battles, but she is so strong, and we are very fortunate," Judy said.

Both Connor and Meghan have shown up in support of their dad, cheering him on alongside Judy at the U.S. Capitol building when he was elected Speaker.

Judy told The Bakersfield Californian that her favorite book is the Bible, adding that one of her most important roles is being a Christian.

"God put on my heart as an outreach," she told the outlet of what she sees as her “ministry." "I am not the politician's wife. I am my own person and a Christian."

Judy has sat on the board of trustees for the infamous Ford’s Theatre — where former President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated — for a decade. She volunteers at the theater to keep Lincoln’s memory alive.

"Judy has true passion for our mission to celebrate the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln. We are delighted to have both her and Congressman McCarthy's involvement in our important work," Paul R. Tetreault, Ford's Theatre’s society director, told The Bakersfield Californian.

Judy and Kevin have publicly shown their support for the venue, walking the red carpet for the Ford's Theatre Gala in 2019.
