Burgeoning urbano artist Kevin Fret has been shot and killed in Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican newspaper El Vocero reports and Remezcla confirms via a statement from Fret’s manager. The artist, who described himself as the first openly gay Latin trap star, was reportedly shot eight times while riding a motorcycle in Rio Piedras early this morning. He was 24.

Fret’s death is the latest in a recent string of murders in Puerto Rico. An FBI official recently declared that the island is facing a “crisis of violence.” Police claim that Fret’s murder is the 22nd homicide in Puerto Rico in 2019, CBS News reports. His death is being investigated by police.

“Kevin was an artistic soul, a big-hearted dreamer,” his manager Eduardo Rodriguez said in a statement. “His passion was music, and still had a lot to do. This violence must stop. There are no words that describe the feeling we have and the pain that causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go. We must all unite in these difficult times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.”
