Throughout Kevin Costner's time in Hollywood, his work in TV and movies has managed to elicit a range of emotions from those watching him onscreen. But it's a rarity to see him emotional in public, which recently happened in front of his children in a setting he never expected.

The Yellowstone star presented the first chapter in his new movie Horizon: An American Saga (which he starred in and directed, debuting on June 28) at the 2024 Cannes Festival in May, showcasing a project that he says has been years in the making. When the film was viewed by critics and movie-goers, Kevin received an 11-minute standing ovation for all the work he put into his project.

When he spoke about the revering moment on the June 3 episode of the Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard podcast, he expressed the moment shook his family in a way he didn't see coming. As he explained, five of his seven children (sons Cayden and Hayes, who stars in the film, and daughters Lily, Annie and Grace, per attended the premiere with him, and they were surprised by how he reacted to seeing the acclaim for his latest project.

"I did get emotional, actually. My eyes filled," he told host Dax Shepard about the experience on the podcast. "There’s 2,500 people there in that theater. I had five of my children. Two of my boys were in tuxes and my three little girls were all dressed up. They were watching too, and they got a little startled by [my reaction]. My son had not ever seen me be that emotional."

While Kevin didn't necessarily elaborate much more about having his children at Cannes with him, he did express how seeing everyone react to Horizon: An American Saga will be something no one in his family will forget. As he made remarks after the standing ovation, he expressed his gratitude for everyone who supported his dreams and how special it was to share the moment with those he loved most.

"I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak," he said to the audience, per Variety. "Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work... There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this — either will my children."

As for what Horizon: An American Saga is about, the movie will follow a 15-year span of life in the American West during the time of the Civil War. Along with Kevin and Hayes, a number of big names star alongside them, including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson and Giovanni Ribisi.

Well, if Kevin's kids were affected by seeing their dad react to everyone's applause in Cannes, imagine what they'll see when the world sees his new project!
