Kevin Costner would ‘like to’ return to ‘Yellowstone’ after drama: I’d have to ‘feel really comfortable’

Maybe he will saddle up after all.

Kevin Costner said he would “like to be able” to return for the final season of “Yellowstone” — but a lot would have to go right in order to make that a reality.

“I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” Costner told “Entertainment Tonight” in an interview to discuss his new movie, “Horizon: An American Saga,” while at CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas.

“I thought I was going to make seven [seasons of ‘Yellowstone’] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — and I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on,” he said. “Maybe it will [work out]. Maybe this will circle back to me.

“If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”

The return of “Yellowstone” for its final season — and whether Costner will appear — has been shrouded in mystery. The series embarked on a bumpy road when differences between Costner and co-creator Taylor Sheridan made headlines and filming on the second half of Season 5 was delayed by last summer’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The series is scheduled to return in November.

Costner also told “ET” that he thought about the fate of his “Yellowstone” character, John Dutton, the ranching family patriarch who was elected governor of Montana in the first half of Season 5.

“Well, you know, he needs to be proactive in what happens and I’ve kind of had my own fantasy how it might be,” Costner said. “But that’s Taylor’s thing.

“I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see.”

Series co-star Lainey Wilson, who said she had “no clue” about the upcoming season, told “ET” over the weekend at the CMT Music Awards that she would be surprised if her character, Abby, doesn’t appear in the final episodes.

“I’ll be honest with you. I’d be shocked,” Wilson said. “And I think how [series creator] Taylor Sheridan writes his stories, and he just has a beautiful way of bringing things back and letting things go — I’ll be shocked.

“So, we’ll see what happens.”

Costner, meanwhile, can finally talk about “Horizon: An American Saga,” his decades-in-the-making four-film Western epic set in the pre-and-post-Civil War period that tracks the expansion of the American West.

Costner stars in, directed and produced the first two parts of the movie. Chapter 1 opens June 28 in theaters nationwide, with Chapter 2 following on Aug. 16.

The movie features an all-star cast including Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Will Patton and Michael Rooker.

The cast also includes Costner’s 15-year-old son, Hayes, who will make his acting debut.

“I named him after the character I play in this. My character’s name is Hayes Ellison,” Costner told “ET.” “And I named Hayes after that character. So I was watching him grow up and I was thinking, ‘Man, I better get with it and make this movie.’ “
