Kevin Costner Breaks Down His Favourite Scene in Yellowstone

After Kevin Costner cried during a lengthy standing ovation at Cannes for Horizon: An American Saga, the actor/director broke down a scene for his other sprawling western, Yellowstone.

Speaking to GQ, he detailed how one of its most famous scenes came to be. It involves environmentalists encountering a bear, and Costner’s landowner John Dutton warning them it’s not to be messed with. According to Costner, it’s rooted in fact.

“I love the scene where the tourists had seen a bear, because it happens. They saw a bear out in the environment. And I happen to be on my way to something, I’m in a tuxedo. And I happen to also have my gun in the car which makes sense.”

Costner also said he likes how his character dealt with the environmentalists, who were trespassing on his property.

“He talks about the notion of what’s his, and I thought that was a classic scene for me. I think dealing with some environmentalists was good fun too. There’s so many scenes that were written so well in Yellowstone for me.”

Yellowstone follows the family drama in and around the largest ranch in Montana, the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch ranch. It ran for five seasons on Paramount, but right now, there are no plans for a sixth.
