‘Kevin Can Wait’ Sneak Peek: Kevin Can’t Do Burger Math

Kevin James has ditched his IPS uniform, but he’s still the king on his new CBS comedy, Kevin Can Wait. In this exclusive sneak peek from the premiere episode of James’ long-awaited sophomore sitcom—which comes 10 years after The King of Queens ended its nine-season run— he’s still as interested in food as ever (a burger will never get cold under his watch!), but he’s now a retired cop and a dad of three who’s about to get some big boyfriend news from his teen daughter, Kendra (Taylor Spreitler).

Kevin Can Wait executive producer Rock Reuben tells Yahoo TV that when James decided he was ready do more television, he wanted to return as a “lovable blue-collar guy” after veering off in a movie career with big screen comedies like Mall Cop, Here Comes the Boom and Zookeeper. “He decided [he wanted to] go back to his basic brand, not re-do King of Queens, but, ‘How can we take it to the next level,’” Reuben says. “And one of the things that he’s never played, really, is a dad. So we started from that point.”

EP Bruce Helford adds that James has missed working in front of a live TV audience, something he thrives on. “He really missed the live aspect of performing in front of an audience, and feeling that connection with them,” Helford says. “He’s excited to get back to it. It’s going to be as funny as anything you’ve ever seen Kevin James do. And it’s going to be a lot of territory you haven’t seen him do.”

Kevin Can Wait premieres Monday, Sept. 19 at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.
