After teasing a new rock album at recent gigs in Los Angeles and New York, Kevin Abstract has released a new single, “BLANKET,” marking the BROCKHAMPTON co-founder’s formal return to solo music.
On the track, Abstract alternates between whispering, “Memory, memory, memory,” and yelping over scuzzy grunge guitars, making it feel like more of a preview of fully fleshed-out songs to come. It arrives with an accompanying video Abstract co-directed with Cole Bat, in which the artist watches the end of the world on the news while surrounded by gigantic, fuzzy monsters. Watch the clip below.
In 2021, Abstract dropped a few solo singles, “SIERRA NIGHTS” with Ryan Beatty and “SLUGGER” featuring slowthai and $not, ahead of last year’s easy life collaboration “DEAR MISS HOLLOWAY” and “Easy v2” with Baird. His last solo album was 2019’s ARIZONA BABY.
A few hours before sharing “BLANKET,” Abstract posted on Twitter that he is “officially no longer in” BROCKHAMPTON. His next solo performance will be at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in November. Grab your tickets for that here.
Last November, BROCKHAMPTON bowed out with their “final” studio album, The Family, along with a companion piece called TM as “a parting gift” to fans.
