Any beauty lover has one elusive makeup item they wish they could add to their collection. Whether it’s the perfect red lipstick or the most precise black liner, there is one holy grail item that is always out of reach. For Kesha, that item was a true chartreuse eyeshadow, a shade seemingly no beauty brand makes. So to solve her problem, she created the hue in her new Kesha Rose FTW Eyeshadow Palette.

Chartreuse may seem like the last color you need in your shadow collection. For Kesha, however, the yellow-green hue was a necessity.

“One of my favorite colors in the world is chartreuse. I could never find a chartreuse [eyeshadow.] It’s my favorite color. I love this color. Why is there no eyeshadow that is this color?” Kesha told In The Know. “So I put a whole team through hell and back trying to find that perfect chartreuse color.”

Chartreuse is described by many as similar to a pale green apple, but it was originally named for its resemblance to a French liqueur in the 1800s. A greener tone of the color was introduced in the 1700s but is not considered to be true chartreuse. The color is notoriously hard to replicate as it is not quite yellow but not quite green.

Search for a chartreuse eyeshadow online, and you’ll probably come up empty. Many companies have shades in the yellow-green family, but they all skew a little too yellow or a little too muted green to be a true chartreuse. But Kesha’s Dinosaur eyeshadow shade is completely and without a doubt a chartreuse hue.

“I worked very hard and argued with a lot of people because I wanted some green,” Kesha says in the announcement video for the palette. “I think chartreuse is an underestimated color and it’s my favorite color of all time. So I really had to get that perfect chartreuse…That color just makes me feel so good.”
