Kerry Washington has revealed that Shaquille O’Neal slid into her DMs. During a recent Watch What Happens Live episode, Washington was asked about the most famous person ever to hit her direct messages.

The acclaimed actress answered without hesitation and left host Andy Cohen shocked. “Um, Shaq, Shaquille O’Neal,” the Bronx native revealed. “He’s a big Scandal fan.”

As she continued, the Little Fires Everywhere thespian stated that the former Los Angeles Lakers star loves to joke about her Scandal character, Olivia Pope. “He’s always like, ‘I’ll do anything for command,'” Washington said, referring to the nickname Pope calls her father.

Kerry Washington appeared on the show for her press campaign promoting new memoir, Thicker Than Water. The Emmy-nominated actress recently shared an excerpt from her upcoming book with Entertainment Weekly. In the exclusive bit, she detailed why she refuses to play the “white girl’s best friend.” She recalled how her role alongside Meg Ryan in 2004’s Against The Ropes led her to that decision.

“In it, I played [Meg Ryan’s] coworker and confidante — this was becoming a new niche for me, the white girl’s best friend…When Harry Met Sally is, to this day, one of my top three movies of all time, so once I’d played Meg Ryan’s best friend, playing the role against anyone else would have been a lateral move. It’s not that I wanted to be the star of the film; I wanted my characters to be in a story of their own. I didn’t want to be an accessory to a white woman’s journey.”

Before Against The Ropes, Kerry Washington played the best friend to a white woman twice. These projects included 2001’s Save The Last Dance and in the cancelled pilot for the infamous Fox dramedy, Wonderfalls.

The American Son star opened up in September 2023 as to why she decided to share her life with the world. In an interview with Robin Roberts, she explained that Thicker Than Water allowed her to share “with purpose.” She also opened up about a previous eating disorder and suicidal ideation.

“I’ve never wanted to share my private life for the sake of fame or for the sake of attention — but I feel like this sharing is with purpose,” she said. “I could feel how the abuse was a way to really hurt myself, as if I didn’t want to be here…It scared me … that I could want to not be here because I was in so much pain.”
