Kentucky Derby Festival 2022 schedule: Thunder Over Louisville, Pegasus Parade and more

The Kentucky Derby Festival is back in full swing for 2022.

The annual event features more than 70 events, drawing 1.5 million people to Louisville each spring in the run-up to the Kentucky Derby, held this year on May 7.

“We are a community organization of 4,000 volunteers who work all year to provide quality entertainment that enhances the community,” Festival President and CEO Matt Gibson said on the Kentucky Derby Festival website.

The festival blasts off each year its marquee event, Thunder Over Louisville, followed by tons of smaller community events including a half and full marathon, hot-air balloon events, The Great Steamboat Race and the Pegasus Parade, which marches down Broadway in downtown Louisville.

More than just being entertaining, the Derby Festival generates in excess of $127.9 million annually for the local economy. Events also help to raise nearly $300,000 for area charities each year.

“We know we have done our job well by the smiles of the people who attend our events,” Gibson said on the website.
