Kentucky Capitol put on lockdown following police chase, shots fired

The Kentucky Capitol building and annex in Frankfort were placed on lockdown Tuesday morning, following a police chase that ended with shots being fired near the buildings, according to a Frankfort Police Department spokeswoman.

Two men were fleeing from police in a stolen vehicle before stopping on Leawood Drive, to the west of the Capitol grounds.

The men fled the vehicle on foot, with one man shooting at officers, though none were hit, according to Frankfort Police Department spokeswoman Lynn Aubrey. One officer did hurt his knee in the pursuit.

An armed suspect was in the annex garage at one point before being apprehended and arrested.

Joshua Gibson of Louisville was charged with first-degree fleeing, second-degree criminal trespassing and receiving stolen property for the stolen vehicle he was in, though further charges could be filed.

The second suspect has not been apprehended as their investigation continues, Aubrey said.

Several local Frankfort schools in the area were locked down during the pursuit, though Aubrey said those have since been lifted.

At 11:15 a.m., Capt. Paul Blanton, spokesman for the Kentucky State Police, told The Courier Journal the Capitol grounds and buildings were no longer on lockdown.
