Kenan Thompson reacts to Kanye West’s uncomfortable pro-Trump rant on 'SNL'

On Late Night With Seth Meyers, longtime Saturday Night Live cast member Kenan Thompson shared his thoughts on Kanye West’s pro-Trump tirade following his song at the end of the show. Kanye said he was bullied backstage for wearing his MAGA hat, and he railed against media and the entertainment industry for being liberal. Everybody seemed surprised, but they should have seen it coming. There was even a promo for the show in which Kanye is wearing a MAGA hat, and Thompson himself says, “Uh-oh, Kanye got that look,” followed by, “Oh, he’s definitely gonna do something.”

Kanye got boos from the crowd but found at least one fan in Donald Trump, who tweeted Sunday that he had heard Kanye was “great” on the show. Before the tirade, the performer called the cast onstage, only to have them stand behind him uncomfortably as he accused them of bullying him.

“I felt so bad for those guys,” Thompson said. “It’s hard to stand there and not be able to debate somebody who’s going so far against your personal opinion as well and just stand there and take it.”

Thompson wasn’t onstage. Sometimes he likes to watch the musical performances on TV backstage in order to experience what the home audience is seeing, he said, and this was one of those occasions.

“So then when you saw what happened, were you so happy with the choice you made?” Meyers asked. “For sure,” Thompson responded. “As soon as he said, ‘Hey, join me up on stage, everybody.’ I was like, ‘Oh, there goes the little cheese in the mousetrap. It’s goin’ down.’”

The rant didn’t air, but fortunately, former SNL cast member Chris Rock was in the audience and shared the video on his Instagram.
