Ken Chinn, SNFU Frontman Known as Mr. Chi Pig, Dead at 57
Ken Chinn, the frontman for Canadian hardcore punk band SNFU known as Mr. Chi Pig, has died, the Edmonton Journal and CBC News report. Chinn’s SNFU bandmate Dave Bacon shared the news on Facebook. A cause of death has not yet been revealed. Ken Chinn was 57 years old.
Following Ken Chinn’s death, SNFU has shared a song called “Cement Mixer (to all my beautiful friends).” The group wrote, “Mr. Chi Pig’s soul took flight. He wanted his friends and fans to enjoy this song he wrote for all of you.” Listen to “Cement Mixer” below (via Thought Crimes MFG).
Ken Chinn was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1962. He formed SNFU (which stands for “Society’s No Fucking Use”) alongside Marc and Brent Belke, Evan C. Jones, and Warren Bidlock in 1981. Chinn sang, wrote lyrics, and created a majority of the artwork for SNFU’s early records. SNFU existed in two distinct iterations: Their initial period lasted from formation until 1989. During that time the group released its 1985 debut ...And No One Else Wanted to Play, 1986 sophomore LP If You Swear, You’ll Catch No Fish, and 1988’s Better Than a Stick in the Eye, which was split up into two parts: Stick Side and Stuck Side.
Chinn eventually moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he reformed the group. SNFU’s second edition released a handful of records over the next three decades, including The Last of the Big Time Suspenders (1991) and In the Meantime and in Between Time (2004). Their final studio album was 2013’s Never Trouble Trouble Until Trouble Troubles You. In 2019, SNFU shared the live LP ...And Yet, Another Pair of Lost Suspenders, which was recorded at Montreal’s Les Foufounes Électriques club in 1992.
