There are things unsaid between Frasier and Diane — and Kelsey Grammer is keen to see their story through.

The Frasier star, 68, revealed that there's one Cheers star he’d like to see re-enter his character's life in the Paramount+ reboot series: Shelley Long’s Diane Chambers.

Speaking to Kelly Clarkson on Tuesday’s episode of her talk show, Grammer admitted that he doesn’t plan on having any of his former castmates join the sitcom’s revival, but he “would like to see Diane come back.”

The characters had a brief relationship on Cheers, and Long, 74, made a few appearances on Frasier, leading Grammer to believe that a reunion between them would allow Fraiser to “put something to bed” and “end up with a nice thing between them.”

Grammer said that Diane played a key role in Dr. Frasier Crane's story from the early days as he stepped into the role of the uptight psychiatrist, beginning in 1982.

“When I first got the role, the key to Frasier for me was that he loved her with his whole heart, that he loved with all of his being. And that actually defined who he is.”

Grammer continued, “He’s been that way ever since. He just goes in wholeheartedly with everything — and that’s what makes him funny.”

The revival series premiered on Oct. 12 and dropped episodes through Dec. 7. Though no news has been confirmed as of yet for a second season, Grammer told The Hollywood Reporter that the team has "several ideas for it."

"I believe we have a home at Paramount+ for several years to come," he affirmed.

While the actor isn’t keen on a reunion with all of his Cheers costars, he and his Frasier castmates had a ball as they got to revisit the beloved characters more than 30 years later.

Bebe Neuwirth joined the reboot as a guest star, stepping back into her role as Lilith Sternin, and she told PEOPLE it’s "always a pleasure and a great time visiting Lilith and Frasier."

“So fun to be back in that wonderful character,” she said of stepping back into the delightfully frosty role — and exploring her and Frasier’s son Freddy’s story.

It was an emotional experience for Grammer, too. In a clip shared exclusively with PEOPLE, he addressed a live studio audience ahead of taping one of the episodes.

"I'm delighted you're here. I can't tell you how grateful I am that you're here and how grateful we are that we have a chance to do this for you again," he told fans. "I am very excited about what we're doing, this new group of people that you can fall in love with and get to know. We've been working so hard at this thing and it's been quite a while, and I think we've done something quite lovely."

He got choked up as he spoke, adding, “My love for this character is very sweet. I wish you this!"
