“Mea culpa” means an acknowledgment of one’s fault or error. As the title of Tyler Perry’s newest Netflix thriller, the film seemingly lives up to its literal definition — based on the trailer that was released on Wednesday (Jan. 24), ahead of its Feb. 23 release date.

Kelly Rowland stars as Mea Harper, a criminal defense attorney who takes on artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes) as a client. He was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, but uncovering the truth about what happened isn’t as direct as it seems. As Mea determines the innocence or guilt of her seductive, reticent client, his desire is revealed and her case takes a dangerous turn.

“If he is not lying, he is a psychopath,” says one character to Mea. Another suggests, “You have no idea who he is. A snake is never violent when stalking their prey; it’s only when they get into striking distance that they get very violent.”

In addition to Rhodes and Rowland, Mea Culpa also stars RonReaco Lee (Sister, Sister), Angela Robinson (The Have And The Have Nots), and Shannon Thornton (P-Valley). It was written, directed, and produced by Perry under his first-look deal with Netflix.

Previously, the honorary Oscar winner debuted A Fall From Grace, A Madea Homecoming, and A Jazzman’s Blues — his first ever screenplay — on the streamer.

Perry is also set to release Six Triple Eight, a drama based on a true story centered around the all-Black female brigade that joined World War II to sort through a three-year backlog of undelivered mail. It will also spotlight the battalion’s efforts in helping American soldiers reconnect with their families while on active duty. Further details regarding this film including its cast and release date have not yet been announced.
