It’s hard to keep score with the legal issues surrounding Kelly Clarkson and her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, in the wake of their divorce. They not only ended their personal union, but she’s still trying to extricate herself from his apparently rule-breaking management of her career, according to a California labor commissioner.

Blackstock already owes his ex $2.6 million in back commissions from the labor board’s ruling, but Clarkson’s legal team pushed the judgment even further by filing a lawsuit claiming that she’s owed even more money, going back to 2007 when he first took control of her career at Starstruck Management. Now, Blackstock is hitting back at the lawsuit by denying “each and every allegation” lodged at him, according to court documents obtained by People. His team is asking for the lawsuit to be dismissed because Clarkson may have missed a crucial deadline.

LOS ANGELES, CA – FEBRUARY 10: Singer Kelly Clarkson (R) and Brandon Blackstock attend the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards at STAPLES Center on February 10, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.

The 41-year-old pop star reportedly “failed to file a notice of appeal within 10 days” of the labor commissioner’s November 2023 ruling. Blackstock is also trying to avoid paying the back commission because he claimed that the original amount went into their joint marital property years ago. “[Clarkson’s] Complaint fails to state facts sufficient to constitute a cause of action against Starstruck and is, therefore, barred for failure to state a claim upon which relief can be granted,” the court papers noted.

Blackstock and Starstruck Management violated California’s Talent Agencies Act which only allows for licensed agents to procure jobs for their clients. As managers, they acted outside of their jurisdiction and that’s why the labor board ruled in Clarkson’s favor to begin with. Clarkson’s lawsuit wants “full and complete accounting from Starstruck of all monies received by Starstruck, directly or indirectly, in connection with any and all contracts, employment, or engagements pertaining in any way to the personal services of [Clarkson],” so the request is pretty comprehensive.

Once the former couple gets these details ironed out, they will hopefully be able to move forward as co-parents. Blackstock dragged Clarkson back into the courtroom numerous times while contesting their prenuptial agreement, and now, their former business partnership. It has to be exhausting for both parties, but Blackstock is making it clear that he will fight to the bitter end.
