Kelly Clarkson Was Falsely Diagnosed With Cancer Before Her 2006 Grammy Performance

Singer Kelly Clarkson recently stopped by Billboard’s Pop Shop Podcast to discuss her new album and Grammy nomination. The three-time Grammy winner is nominated this year for Best Pop Solo Performance for her American Idol version of “Piece by Piece.”

While speaking to Billboard’s Keith Caulfield and Katie Atkinson, Clarkson reflected on the first time she won a Grammy, in 2006. The singer revealed, “Well, not many people know this, not to be a Debbie Downer, but I was told that morning that I had cancerous results for something.”

Clarkson went on to perform that evening at the Grammy ceremony and took home two awards: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. She recalled, “And then when I won, I thought, ‘Oh, my God. This is like God giving me a wonderful thing before something horrible happens'”

Fortunately for Clarkson, the cancer diagnosis turned out to be false. “I went to the doctor’s next day and they apologized for mixing up results. And I was like, ‘Are you for real?!’”

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
