Kelly Clarkson sues ex-husband Brandon Blackstock after $2.6 million ruling, saying he may owe her more

A California labor commissioner previously found that Blackstock owed the singer over past commissions as her manager.

Kelly Clarkson is suing her ex-husband and former manager, Brandon Blackstock, arguing that he may owe her more than the $2.6 million he was ordered to pay her four months ago in connection with several business deals he improperly orchestrated.

In court documents filed Monday in Los Angeles and reviewed by EW, the "Since U Been Gone" singer, 41, alleges that Blackstock, 47, and his family-run firm, Starstruck Management, illegally procured business deals on her behalf dating back to 2007. (The previous ruling in November only went back to 2017.)

The documents claim that Starstruck "performed the functions, and acted in the capacity, of an unlicensed talent agency" when Clarkson first entered into an oral agreement with the firm 17 years ago, and that the firm violated the Talent Agencies Act by "unlawfully procuring employment" for her without a license.

Clarkson is seeking "full and complete accounting from Starstruck of all monies received by Starstruck, directly or indirectly, in connection with any and all contracts, employment, or engagements pertaining in any way to the personal services of [Clarkson]."

Representatives for Clarkson and Blackstock didn't immediately respond to EW's request for comment Friday.

An attorney for Blackstock, Bryan Freedman, said in a statement to Rolling Stone, "It is morally, ethically and legally wrong to attempt to get monies back from your ex-husband who not only helped her as her manager but who used those earnings on their children and Kelly and Brandon's lifestyle during the marriage."

Last fall, a California labor commissioner ordered Blackstock to pay Clarkson $2.6 million because he negotiated contract deals on her behalf without a licensed agent present, thereby overstepping his duties as manager.

Clarkson and Blackstock began dating in 2013 and got married that same year. The singer filed for divorce in 2020, and their split was finalized in 2022. Clarkson and Blackstock share two children.
