Kelly Clarkson moved to tears by 'Voice' contestant's version of her song about absentee dads

Stephanie Skipper made the bold choice to do the Kelly Clarkson song “Piece by Piece” during her audition on The Voice Monday night. It was especially audacious given how much the song means to both of them.

The song is about Kelly’s husband, Brandon Blackstock, restoring her faith in men after Kelly grew up with an absentee father. Stephanie also grew up without her dad. Even though the performance was good, Kelly didn’t turn her chair. “I’m so sad,” Kelly said. “I know this is embarrassing. I’m crying. I’m so mad I didn’t turn. The fact that you picked that song — it was cool. I’m so sorry.”

Stephanie still wanted to express her gratitude to Kelly. “I have to say thank you for writing that song, because it means a lot to me and it means a lot to share in your art, because it means something in my world,” she said.

Luckily for Stephanie, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton turned their chairs; she ended up picking Adam as her coach. And while Kelly apologized profusely for not turning, Stephanie let her know it was all cool. She said, “You don’t have to apologize. I’m on the show, girl!” Then Kelly went up on stage and the two hugged it out as Stephanie told her, “I love you!”

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC. Watch clips and full episodes of The Voice for free on Yahoo View.
