Kelly Clarkson went through hell and back during her contentious divorce from Brandon Blackstock. When she got to the other side as a single woman, the 41-year-old pop star realized she needed a serious change in her life. Despite her successful daytime talk show, Los Angeles wasn’t the right place to live anymore.

“I’ll be real honest: I thought I was making a horrible decision,” Clarkson told USA Today. “I knew I needed a fresh start and couldn’t be in LA.” Her heart “really wanted to be in Montana,” but she knew that she couldn’t “really do a show from there quite yet.” That’s when a lightbulb went off in her head: “The only other option would probably be New York,” she said.
Now that she’s getting settled into her new Manhattan apartment, Clarkson has already realized that it’s the perfect spot for her and her two children with Blackstock, daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington, 7. “I genuinely love it, and I love that my kids love it,” she gushed. Even her longtime music director, Jason Halbert, who also made the East Coast move, has noticed a change in his boss. “Moving to New York has given us all a renewed sense of energy. We can tell Kelly just has this spark in her step right now that’s exciting to see,” he explained.

Clarkson is also admitting that the smile on her face at this time in her life is genuine because the last four years were challenging and more about her just getting through each day. “What’s cool for me with Season 5 is I am in such a great place, not only with my kids, but with me personally and with the show,” Clarkson summed up. “I feel like a weight has lifted. That move was very needed. I think the thing I’m most excited about with Season 5, on a selfish level, is just showing up to work smiling and actually meaning it. That’s a beautiful gift that you don’t realize until you’re out of it.”
