Kelly Clarkson has started a new chapter in her life and she’s getting real about her last chapter with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. With their contentious divorce behind her, the 41-year-old singer is opening up with surprising revelations that fans have never heard before.

Clarkson admitted to People that she’s always had the attitude that “love is hard” because she believes “we put a lot of pressure on that word.” She added, “Sometimes love is looking at someone and going, ‘This is not good for you. This is not good for me.’ That’s a hard thing to face. But when you do, I think you grow.” She doesn’t want people to think that sentiment is “depressing,” but it does offer more perspective when she noted that she “never wanted to get married the first time” — she did it for her ex.

The “Breakaway” singer explained, “[Brandon] had children, a religious background, and it was important, I think, for him. But I’ve never been that person. Because I’ve been through a couple divorces in my family, I just don’t like to put any weight on it. It can happen; it doesn’t have to happen.” When Clarkson became engaged to Blackstock, he was already the father of two children, Savannah, 21, and Seth, 17, from his first marriage to Melissa Ashworth. She also had two kids with the former music manager, daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington Alexander, 7.

Now that she’s divorced from her children’s father, Clarkson has some very clear thoughts about remarrying while they are under 18. “For my kids, I definitely would never even think about it until they’re out of my house.” She’s also a little hesitant on dating because she finds it “awkward.”

“I was single until I was, like, 30, and I forgot how really good at that I am,” she joked. “I told a friend [that a potential partner] would have to be an individual that brings their own life to the table without needing anything from me. It’s far more romantic to say, ‘I want you, but I don’t need anything.’ But what Clarkson wants her fans to know is that she is enjoying time for herself with a successful career, a new life in New York City, and her children thriving in her happy home. She promised, “I’m really good right now, I’m having a good time.”
