Kehlani featured her only daughter in a 2022 music video

Kehlani is "so proud" to be a mom.

The Grammy-nominated singer, who uses she/they pronouns, welcomed her first child, Adeya Nomi Parrish Young-White, with guitarist Javie Young-White in March 2019.

Before giving birth to their daughter, Kehlani was very open about their desire to become a mother. When they announced the pregnancy in October 2018, Kehlani penned an Instagram tribute, detailing her excitement to "document this journey and feel the freedom any pregnant person should."

"If you know me, you know i've dreamt about motherhood since i was very young. when asked what my goals are, it's always the idea of a big healthy happy family & whatever comes along is a plus," Kehlani wrote. "Dearest little girl, i am so proud to be your mommy. I cannot wait to meet you, i know you will be 50,000 times more special than i can even imagine at this moment."

Since welcoming Adeya, the singer has detailed how motherhood has put her more in touch with her body and influenced the way she makes music. In an interview with Rolling Stone in October 2021, Kehlani shared that being a mother made them think "about everything differently."

"I think motherhood influenced my writing — you write about love from different emotions," they said. "You can write about love from anguish or impatience or gratitude or lack of it. But all of the things you gain when you become a parent influence how you view love."

She was born at home

Kehlani and Young-White welcomed their baby girl on March 23, 2019, at home in California. The singer revealed in a since-deleted Instagram post that she had delivered Adeya peacefully in their bathroom.

"This weekend our angel arrived healthy & perfect in every way in our bathroom at home," Kehlani wrote. "Unmedicated homebirth was the absolute hardest yet most powerful thing i've ever done. thankful beyond words. in love beyond comparison."

Young-White also shared the news on X (formerly known as Twitter). "Adeya is home. Kehlani gave birth at home standing up, unmedicated, into my arms as we spoke her 1st words to her," he wrote. "The most beautiful moment of my life."

She has an adorable nickname

Kehlani often refers to their daughter on social media by her adorable nickname, "Bear."

In February 2022, the singer posted a sweet tribute to Adeya using her nickname. "my truest love. my biggest piece. my every moment. my bear. co star for life," she wrote on Instagram.

The "Up At Night" singer also used the nickname when they posted a 3rd birthday shout-out to Adeya in March 2022.

"i didn't think i'd ever be missing a birthday due to work, but you say 'i understand. mommy is at work!' and we have hand shaken and pinky swore on the illest princess rockstar pirate party when i get home. TO THE MOON AND BACK AROUND, BEAR!" the singer wrote.

She shares her mom's interest in music

Adeya is following in her mom's footsteps when it comes to music. In April 2022, Kehlani revealed during an interview for Apple Music that they often catch Adeya singing songs from their album Blue Water Road.

"She will forever have a point or five on all of my projects because she's really the driving force of everything," Kehlani said. "She loves being at the studio ... She will say, 'give me a microphone,' and ask for a handheld and run around the studio. I have voice memos of ... my daughter with the autotune on ... just ripping it."

She has a lot of hobbies

Adeya may have taken an interest in music, but she also has many other hobbies, too.

Kehlani told Vogue in April 2022 that her daughter likes to do different activities, ranging from fishing to photography. The singer has also made it a point to let their daughter do all kinds of hobbies so she feels free to explore all her passions.

"It's important to let her try all the things that she wants to do because ... I was able to do everything that I wanted to do and try all these different things," Kehlani said. "My mom just knew the importance of it, and that's why I grew up to wear so many hats, I think."

She appeared in her mom's music video for "Little Story"

At nearly 3 years old, Adeya made her music video debut in February 2022 when she appeared in Kehlani's music video for "Little Story."

In the adorable cameo at the end of the black-and-white video, Adeya and her mom were seen playing in a creek and sharing a sweet embrace.

She likes animals

Adeya is very comfortable around animals.

In addition to playing with a bird in a since-deleted Instagram video, Kehlani has shared that Adeya loves hanging out with her two dogs. In a video interview with Vogue, the mom-of-one listed being around animals as one of the most important parts of a healthy childhood as Adeya kissed one of the dogs.

The pair also spent some mother-daughter time together at an aquarium in August 2022. Kehlani posted photos on Instagram from their visit to the Sea Life aquarium at the Mall of America in Minnesota, where the two posed in front of a large fish tank.

She is being raised in an inclusive environment

Kehlani told The Advocate in April 2021 that there are "a lot of societal standards" that they want to avoid enforcing with Adeya.

"You're raised to find something you're not passionate about and stick to it and make certain amounts of money ... and then not help anyone and just hoard everything," Kehlani said. "Anything you could imagine that we've been taught is our purpose, I just want my daughter to know that it's okay to feel you don't agree with any of that and it's okay to march to the beat of your own drum."

As someone who uses she/they pronouns and identifies as lesbian, Kehlani has said it's important that Adeya is raised in an inclusive environment, so she knows she'll be accepted no matter her identity.

"All my friends, all her aunties, uncles, her godparents, everybody is just loudly queer," the singer said. "Our generation already kind of broke the mold of getting to that point, so I don't even think our kids are going to think about it as something that they have to identify and differentiate. I feel it should be normal."

"We'll be reading queer stories, queer books where the baby has two dads, two moms, two parents who don't identify as either. Movies that have that," Kehlani added. "She sees healthy queer couples. So, I don't think that she's going to even think about it as 'This is different from normal.' "

She went on tour with her mom

Adeya got a taste of tour life when she went on the road with Kehlani for their Blue Water Road Trip tour in 2022. While touring is a new dynamic for the duo, the singer has talked about the importance of doing "what's best" for Adeya on the road.

"I don't want her to ever feel like I was dragging her along with my life," she said in her interview for Apple Music. "With touring I'm taking the extra mile to make sure every venue is really baby friendly and we're gonna have like a little nursery going on in the backstage and alcohol-free zones and just making sure everything is catering to my kid."

In October 2022, Kehlani shared photos of Adeya onstage during the last night of the tour's North American leg. In the images, Adeya waved to the crowd and cuddled her mom.
