Keanu Reeves may be the voice of Shadow the Hedgehog in Paramount’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie, sources familiar with the matter told The Hollywood Reporter. Paramount has yet to officially announce Shadow’s voice actor, even after a detailed CinemaCon presentation, but THR says their news about the video game adaptation comes from “multiple sources.”

Shadow the Hedgehog first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 as an artificial lifeform meant to provide a cure for Maria Robotnik, a cousin of Dr Eggman (Dr Robotnik in the films) afflicted with a terrible disease. G.U.N., a military organization, deemed Shadow a threat and kept him in captivity for 50 years until Dr Eggman released him, after which point Shadow left and did his own thing.

He also found a gun and a potty mouth for the edgy 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog game.

It sounds like most of this won’t play a role in the Sonic 3 movie, though. Paramount gave a brief bit of background on the film during CinemaCon and said Jim Carrey’s Dr Robotnik created the hog himself. Shadow’s birth pulled the bad doctor out of a depressive slump and reignited his ambition to rule the world, though whether Shadow tags along as a friend is up in the air at this point.

Keanu Reeves recently starred as Johnny Silverhand again in Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion, following his reprisal of the title character in John Wick 4. Warner Bros. is making yet another Matrix film, and while Reeves turned up as Neo in 2021’s Matrix Resurrections, there’s no word on whether Reeves will make an appearance in the new film.
