Keanu Reeves & Alexandra Grant Have Been Dating for Years, Not 3 Months

Ever since news broke of their relationship (and the world fell in love with it), we’ve all been wondering the same thing: How long has Keanu Reeves been dating Alexandra Grant? TBH, we assumed they’d literally just become a thing when they started making headlines back in November. But while they’re keeping mum on the subject, Reeves’ longtime pal Jennifer Tilly just revealed that the Matrix actor and Grant aren’t exactly a “new” couple.

If you’re thinking, Wait, what? You’re not alone. In fact, that’s exactly what Tilly said when she first learned Reeves had a new love in his life — which she learned quite a bit further back than the end of 2019 when the rest of us did. “I remember a couple years ago, about a year and a half ago, [Alexandra] said, ‘Keanu Reeves is my boyfriend’ and I’m like, ‘Wait. What? What? What?'” Tilly told Page Six at an American Heart Association event on Wednesday night. “She was so cool I thought she was a lesbian.”

Because Tilly is aware of how long her friend has really been in the relationship, she can hardly wrap her head around the recent fascination over it. She explained, “It’s really astonishing to me how in the last five months, all of a sudden, she goes to an event with him and everybody goes insane, like, ‘It’s his new girlfriend,’ because she had gone to a lot of events with him.” She continued, “It’s just suddenly surfaced that he’s been dating her for several years.”

While that does come as a surprise as first, the reality is that Tilly’s timeline makes sense. Reeves and Grant have long been friends, collaborating for the first time (to public knowledge) on Reeve’s 2011 book Ode to Happiness — Grant, an L.A.-based artist, created the illustrations. In 2016, they co-founded the publishing house X Artists’ Books. And since Reeves is notoriously private about his love life, it makes sense he’d keep it quiet.

In fact, according to Tilly, one of the reasons Reeves and Grant are so well-matched is because they’re both so laid-back. “I saw him at her last art opening, and he’s not, like, wanting the spotlight, because he’s a really low-key guy, too, and I think why everybody went crazy is that they’re sort of the perfect couple,” Tilly said. “I think everybody wishes that they had something like that. It’s not a razzle, dazzle Hollywood romance.”

Of course, knowing now how much history is between them, it’s impossible not to wonder if a wedding could be in the near future. Don’t count on it, though, says Tilly: “I don’t know, that doesn’t seem very hip and bohemian, does it? They’re artists. They’re just going to do what they do.”

Fair enough! We’re just happy knowing Reeves is happy. Here’s hoping we get to know (and see more of) Grant as their relationship continues.
