Kaylee Gain Still Has 'Significant Cognitive Impairment,' Doesn’t Know Why She’s in Hospital Weeks After Fight
The Missouri teen suffered serious brain injuries as a result of the fight

Kaylee GainKaylee Gain, the Missouri teen who suffered traumatic brain injuries following a fight outside her high school, is still displaying “significant cognitive impairment” while in the hospital, her family says in a statement.
Gain, who has recently started talking again, has been in the hospital since March 8. According to an April 1 statement shared with PEOPLE by the family’s attorney, Bryan Kaemmerer, Gain seems to know that she is in the hospital but she does not understand why.
In “limited conversations,” Gain “tends to reiterate the same short sentences over and over,” Kaemmerer says in the statement.
The statement also notes that Gain is still unable to walk without the assistance of hospital staff.
A previous statement from the family noted that a 15-year-old girl involved in the altercation had been arrested.
The fight that landed Gain in the hospital occurred on March 8, and was captured on camera, the St. Louis County Police Department previously said.
Gain was found suffering “a severe head injury,” according to authorities. KSDK reported that the video showed one girl hitting another’s head into the pavement multiple times.
The 15-year-old suspect was referred to family court on March 9. Since then, eight other juveniles have been referred to court for consideration of potential assault charges in connection with the incident, police say.

In the statement released through Kaemmerer on Monday, the family says it was encouraged upon hearing that the suspect wants to apologize for what happened.
“While these statements do not change the family’s position that it is appropriate for the suspect to be tried as an adult, it is encouraging that the accused appears to be remorseful for what transpired during these unfortunate events,” Kaemmerer says in the statement.

Kaemmerer also noted that the family has since learned that social media posts made from an account with the accused’s name that the attorney called “distasteful" do not appear to be legitimate given that the suspect did not have access to her phone in the aftermath of the attack.
Two GoFundMe accounts started in the wake of Gain’s hospitalization have combined to raise over $440,000. On March 22, it was announced that she had been moved out of ICU as her recovery continues.
