Katy Perry Nearly Suffers a Wardrobe Issue in Custom Kate Barton Top During ‘American Idol’ Taping

Katy Perry almost experienced a wardrobe malfunction on live TV during Monday’s episode of “American Idol.” The “Teenage Dream” singer and fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were listening to the top 20 contestants on the long-running reality competition show.

For the episode, Perry wore a custom Kate Barton look, which featured a futuristic silver bra top. The look also featured a shiny, high-waisted skirt. Perry opted for bold silver statement earrings and a ring to accessorize her look.

As for Perry’s hair and makeup, the “Daisies” singer opted for her iteration of the wet look, with her raven-black hair appearing damp and flowing past her shoulders. Perry’s makeup featured a bold eye and soft pink lip. The singer’s entire ensemble was curated by stylist Tatiana Waterford.

While the bra top held to Perry’s frame for promotional images, the taping of Monday night’s episode proved a challenge. Perry took to her personal Instagram account following the episode to give fans and followers a behind-the-scenes look at what happened to her Kate Barton top. “I need my top to stay on,” she said in the video, holding the silver, sculptural piece while wardrobe assistants tried to fix the problem behind Perry’s back. “If it’s not fixed, this show is going to get more than it wanted,” Perry quipped.

At one point during the video, which can be seen here, Bryan stepped it, saying, “Hey! I got it. I’m going in.” But the country singer quickly looked perplexed by the intricate way in which the custom top was secured to Perry.

Perry’s post also included footage from the live taping, which featured Perry cradling the Kate Barton top while speaking to one of the contestants. The singer eventually held a pillow over top of her fallen garment and nearly hid beneath the judge’s table. “My top broke,” she captioned the Instagram post.
