Katie Holmes on Hillary Clinton's loss: 'It hurt my child so much'

Even though it hurt, Katie Holmes was able to take a lesson away from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s surprising loss in the 2016 presidential election.

On Tuesday, Holmes sat down for a radio interview with Jenna Bush Hager on TODAY Show Radio, where she opened up about how Clinton’s loss affected both her and her and Tom Cruise’s daughter Suri.

“I know I thought Hillary was going to win this year, and it just hurt so badly when she didn’t,” said Holmes.”And I know that it hurt my child so much as a 10-year-old, and it really made me think, ‘Oh we have a lot…a long way to go as women.'”

Holmes wasn’t shy about her support of Clinton during the election. In December 2015, she shared a picture of her and Suri meeting Clinton and her daughter Chelsea on Instagram. “Mothers and daughters. #wearewithhillary,” she wrote in the caption.

Holmes also attended a fundraising lunch for the Democratic presidential candidate hosted by Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel in August 2016.

Clinton’s loss reminded Holmes that she and other mothers “have to raise our girls to be very strong, not just for themselves, but to open the doors for other people,” she told Hager. “Because as hard as we think we have it, there’s so many women in the world that have it so much harder and we really need to be strong and help them.”

Sticking to the political theme of the conversation, Bush Hager brought the chat around to Holmes’ 2004 movie First Daughter, in which Holmes plays a president’s daughter who goes off to college and ends up falling for an undercover Secret Service agent. And it just so happens that Holmes actually reached out to Bush Hager when she was researching for the role because she was the current first daughter at the time.

“I was in Austin, Texas. She was at, like frat parties, so it was sort of stereotyping, I think, what I was going through. But you called me and I am such a fan of yours, but I loved Dawson’s Creek,” remembered Bush Hager. “It was the era of Dawson’s Creek. I was in college and we were watching, and then I was with my girlfriends and I get a message from Katie Holmes. And I’m like, ‘Who is this person pranking me? Who can this be?’ And I just knew that you didn’t want to stay in my dorm room in Austin, Texas, so we never made that happen.”
