Katie Couric Praises Wendy Williams for Revealing She Resides in a Sober Living House

Fame comes with an increased level of public scrutiny, so it’s not surprising that celebrities don’t always reveal struggles or personal details of their lives. Just a day after veteran talk show host Wendy Williams divulged she now resides in a sober house, Katie Couric stopped by The Wendy Williams Show to show her support and commend Williams for being honest about her battle with addiction.

“I know this is your show, but I just want to start by saying I’m so proud of you,” Couric gushed during her visit to the show on Wednesday. “That was a hard thing to do. I felt for you and I think your candor and honesty is going to help so many people.” Couric continued in that vein, pointing out to Williams that her coming forward will help “not only people struggling… with addiction,” but may very well help “raise additional research dollars so people can really understand the science of addiction better.” Ultimately, Couric admitted she felt inspired by Williams’ bravery, telling the talk show host, “I think you will do phenomenal things with this. I was really moved.”

The entire exchange between Couric and Williams was sparked by Tuesday’s episode of The Wendy Williams Show, during which an emotional Williams addressed her current living situation with viewers. “After I go to the Pilates, I go to several meetings all around town in the tri-state area. And I see my brothers and sisters, caught up in their addiction and looking for help,” she said, choking back tears. “… After I finished my appointments, seeing my brothers and sisters, breaking bread, I am driven by my 24-hour sober coach back to the home that I live in, here in the tri-state with a bunch of smelly boys who have become my family. They hog the TV and watch soccer. We talk and read and then I get bored with them.” Prior to her admission on Tuesday’s show (which Williams returned to hosting in early March), only Williams’ husband and son were aware she has been staying in a sober living house “for some time now.”

Williams’ sobriety and Couric’s subsequent visit aren’t the only developments this week that point toward Williams’ life being on the upswing. According to Hollywood Life, the 2019 Daytime Emmy nominations were just revealed, and Williams snagged a nod for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host. It would seem a double congratulations is in order.
