Katie Couric is honoring fellow breast cancer survivors in the sweetest way. After the 65-year-old opened up about her own breast cancer battle earlier this year, she’s giving back to moms impacted by the cancer by gifting $25,000 worth of baby formula.

Couric teamed up with baby formula company Bobbie and the non-profit The Breasties, an organization that aims to create a community and offer resources for cancer survivors and caregivers, to share the special surprise. The journalist gifted free formula for a year to 111 new moms impacted by breast cancer.

“One of the reasons I wanted to be public about my diagnosis is I know that I have the capability to influence public health in this country and to educate and inform people and arm them with the knowledge they need to live longer lives,” she told PEOPLE.

She continued, “And not only is it a huge privilege, but also an enormous responsibility. I was really excited and honored to be a part of this initiative by Bobbie to be able to share some really good news with so many of these women who have been through an awful lot, and not only need emotional support but need financial support as well, some of them.”

She surprised the women with $25,000 worth of formula on a Zoom call hosted by The Breasties on behalf of Bobbie. Additionally, Couric and Bobbie CEO Laura Modi are launching a public petition that fights for legislative changes to help women who require formula or donor milk after a mastectomy.

The mom of two revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in a September 2022 photo on her Instagram account and in a personal essay. She was diagnosed in June 2022 and shared her treatment story with followers to encourage others to take preventative health care seriously.

“Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. On June 21st, I became one of them,” she captioned the photo of her in a hospital gown and mask. “I wanted to share my personal story with you all and encourage you to get screened and understand that you may fall into a category of women who needs more than a mammogram.”

She revealed that she was six months overdue for her mammogram and after an X-ray and ultrasound (warranted by her dense breasts) doctors discovered that she had breast cancer. Since her diagnosis, Couric has had a lumpectomy to remove the cancerous tissue and completed radiation treatment.

“I’m feeling great,” Couric told PEOPLE. “And really grateful because as I’ve often said, I’m the lucky recipient of everything modern medicine has to offer. I was diagnosed early when my breast cancer is not only treatable, it’s curable, and having experienced my husband’s colon cancer, my sister’s pancreatic cancer, and many other friends who I’ve lost to cancer, the fact that strides have been made and that my situation, my prognosis is so good. Honestly, that’s beyond fortunate.”
