"Well, sh*t…this sucks," the comedian wrote on social media.

Kathy Griffin and Randy Bick are going their separate ways.

The comedian filed for divorce from the marketing executive on Thursday, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. The documents list the couple's date of separation as Dec. 22 and cite "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the end of their marriage. Griffin's filing also says the two signed a prenup that dictates how their assets should be divided.

The split comes just days before what would have been their fourth wedding anniversary. Griffin and Bick married in a surprise New Year's Day ceremony in 2020, after dating for nearly a decade.

Griffin seemed to acknowledge the breakup on social media Friday, posting a statement that simply said, "Well, sh*t…this sucks."

News of the separation was perhaps as surprising as the marriage itself, as Griffin sang Bick's praises on a recent episode of Nicole Byer's Why Won't You Date Me? podcast. "My husband is a champ," she said. "The thing that got me out of suicidal ideation was when the doctor said, 'The effects it has on your survivors is so awful.' That's the thing that got me to click out of it, was the thought that that's a horrible thing to do to someone — to be their surviving spouse or friend."

"He's been great," Griffin continued. "I realized I've asked a lot of him and he's stood by me. But I feel like that's a big one in relationships. For better or worse. That s--- really happens. Sometimes it really does get worse."

Though Griffin did admit there was some normal marital strife. "We fight sometimes," she said, "and it is hard being together a lot."
