Kathy Bates On Learning She Has Lymphedema: ‘You Think American Horror Story Is Scary? You Should Have Been In That Room With Me’
Academy Award-winning actor Kathy Bates is a two-time cancer survivor who is living with Lymphedema, a chronic disorder of the lymphatic system that results in swelling in one or more parts of the body.

“He (the surgeon) took 19 lymph nodes from my left armpit and three from my right,” she says adding, “You think American Horror Story is scary? You should have been in that room with me.”
Lymphedema can be hereditary (Primary Lymphedema) or may occur following a surgical procedure, infection, radiation or other physical trauma (Secondary Lymphedema).
On Thursday’s episode Kathy, who is a national spokeswoman for LE&RN; the Lymphatic Education & Research Network, talks about what she and others are doing to further public awareness about the condition.
