Kate Winslet learns that it’s lonely at the top in the official teaser trailer for The Regime. The HBO limited series, premiering March 3, finds the actress in the role of an English chancellor whose metaphorical crown is slipping. Her political positioning leaves her feeling somewhat paranoid, and the only person she believes she can trust is a man who has been stripped of his personal identity.

“You’re here because you’re a nobody. You’re not anybody,” Winslet’s character tells the one soldier she keeps close (portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts). “And that means I can trust you.”

The Regime, written by showrunner Will Tracy, “tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel,” according to a synopsis. In the trailer, Winslet positions Schoenaerts as a mouthpiece for her anger and frustration. She doesn’t seem to be the kindest leader to begin with, but when he’s the one barking orders and berating people, it takes some of the heat off of her.

The six-episode series, directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs, also stars Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant. Additional cast members include Danny Webb, David Bamber, Henry Goodman, Stanley Townsend, Louie Mynett, Rory Keenan, Karl Markovics, and Pippa Haywood.

The Regime, previously titled The Palace, marks Winslet’s latest HBO project following the conclusion of Mare of Easttown, the crime drama series that ran for seven episodes in 2021. She also starred in Mildred Pierce, which Todd Haynes created for the network in 2011.
