Kate Winslet has revealed why she took charge of love scenes with Saoirse Ronan in her new movie.

The Oscar-winning actress plays palaeontologist Mary Anning in Francis Lee's critically-buzzed Ammonite, which is due for release next year and co-stars Little Women actress Saoirse as Charlotte, the depressed wife of an older and wealthy gentleman.

The film has picked up a lot of buzz partly due to an allegedly explicit sex scene between the characters.

And, having previously revealed she and Saoirse choreographed the raunchy scene (which was rearranged to be shot on Saoirse's birthday), Kate also recently explained why she was the one to take charge of the scene in question.

"I've definitely had more experience and played LGBTQ characters in the past," she told Variety's Awards Circuit podcast.

"It just made sense."

She continued: "Women know what women want, let's not beat about the bush. Saoirse and I knew we could unite in our feelings about these characters and where they're at, and to tell that story physically.

"It was a very joyful experience."
