While Titanic is not the only movie Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio have starred in together (the two also moved viewers in 2008’s About Revolutionary Road), their palpable chemistry in the tragic story will go down in the books as one of our favorite onscreen couples. And while the two made us believe in true love onscreen, their relationship off the screen blossomed into a long-lasting friendship.

In a recent interview with PORTER magazine, Winslet broke down why she and DiCaprio connected so deeply so many years ago. It all started when the magazine asked Winslet if she knew the meme that says, ‘Find yourself someone who looks at you the way Leo looks at Kate.’ Winslet, unaware of it all, snorted with laughter.

“[He’s looking at me like that because] he just knows I can see right through it all,” Winslet told of the Oscar winner. “I think when you experience something so seismic, so young… we really went through that together.” In other words, their experience together during and following the success of Titanic bonded them for life.

And, speaking of the effects of the box office hit, Winslet also opened up to the outlet about how her world shifted after its success.

“I felt like I had to look a certain way, or be a certain thing, and because media intrusion was so significant at that time, my life was quite unpleasant,” she admitted.

As a result, Winslet then pivoted her career into less blockbuster titles, something she was sometimes criticized for by fans and media alike. “Journalists would always say, ‘After Titanic, you could have done anything and yet you chose to do these small things’ … and I was like, Yeah, you bet your life I did!” she said. “Because guess what, being famous was horrible.'”

And while we can’t imagine how much pressure that must be, we’re glad she’s always had DiCaprio to rely on.
