Kate Walsh Opens Up About Going Through Early Menopause

Kate Walsh has faced far more in the past few years than the cancellation of two shows. The Private Practice star has revealed that she’s faced early menopause.

“I don’t have children. I’m not going to have kids. I went through early menopause. That happened,” the 48-year-old actress said Wednesday on SiriusXM’s Conversations with Maria Menounos.

Walsh noted that early menopause is becoming “more and more common” for women. “Who knows why? It could be a product of our environment. The pill, we don’t know,” she said. The star explained that she got checked after her older sister went through early menopause and advised that Kate see a doctor.

Kate also reflected on the notion that a woman can have it all, children and a career. “I don’t know if you can actually have it all. I think that is actually this American myth. I wouldn’t call it a dream,” she posited. “I think it’s a bit of a myth in that it’s this huge pressure. We’re like, ‘Wait a minute, am I less than if I’m not a mother? If I’m not a rock star in my career?’”

In 2011, following her divorce from film executive Alex Young, Kate opened up about wanting to have children. “I feel like a loser [for not having kids]. I would definitely love to be a parent,” she told More magazine at the time. “But I definitely don’t think I want to do it on my own.”

Now, however, Kate feels content on her own. “I’m alright with it,” she told Menounos. “I think it would be good for women to have another story so that they don’t feel less than by not being a mom.”
