Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales

2023 proved to be another fashionable year for Kate Middleton.

After becoming the Princess of Wales following the death of Queen Elizabeth and the accession of King Charles in 2022, this was Princess Kate's first full year in her new elevated role. The royal continued to practice some of her style tricks, such as recycling favorite pieces and wearing jewelry from the royal vault, but she also changed up her work wardrobe by experimenting more with colorful suits. There were even some unexpected moments, like the sweater vest she wore during an October outing to support Ukrainian refugees.

From glamorous ballgowns paired with tiaras for Buckingham Palace receptions to jeans paired with casual tops for outdoor adventures, Princess Kate's wardrobe in 2023 had it all, but which stood out above the rest? See her top looks of the year below.

Princess Kate's most regal look of the year came at King Charles and Queen Camilla's coronation on May 6. She topped an Alexander McQueen dress in ivory silk crepe with silver bullion and thread work embroidery featuring rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock motifs with the Royal Victorian Order robe reflecting her status as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

Instead of a tiara, as some expected, she topped off her look with a Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece featuring silver bullion, crystal and silver threadwork three-dimensional leaf embroidery.

The Princess of Wales loved the combination of the Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara and a pink sequin gown by Jenny Packham so much that she wore it twice in 2023. She first sported the look in June for Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa of Jordan's royal wedding banquet, then repeated it in December for the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace.

Kate also wore Queen Elizabeth's Greville Chandelier earrings on both occasions, completing the dazzling look.

Princess Kate proved that polka dots are a classic print that never goes out of style at the Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle in June. She paired the Alessandra Rich dress with a Philip Treacy hat in black and white for the occasion, standing out among the crowd (even those sporting the blue robes and hats topped with ostrich feathers of the ancient order!).

During a May 25 visit to the Foundling Museum, Princess Kate embraced the Barbiecore trend sweeping the world thanks to the Barbie movie. She paired a pink suit with a matching top and a statement white belt and matching shoes, looking straight out of a Mattel box.

Kate wore many colorful suits throughout the year. "I think it marks a new era in her royal life," Bethan Holt, fashion director at the Daily Telegraph told PEOPLE. "It shows her confidence is growing and that she’s willing to take more risks and do something that might not have come naturally to her."

For her Royal Ascot debut since becoming the Princess of Wales, Kate opted for one of her boldest looks yet. She popped in a red tea-length dress with a V-neckline and slightly puffed long sleeves by Alexander McQueen, the designer behind her 2011 royal wedding gown and a go-to brand in her royal rotation. Princess Kate completed the look with a coordinating floral hat by Philip Treacy and gold statement earrings plus a matching clutch and heels.

After sticking to more traditional shades of green for the St. Patrick's Day parade in previous years, Princess Kate took things up a notch for her first year as the honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards. While the teal color of her Catherine Walker & Co coat dress and matching accessories was certainly unexpected, there was a clever reason behind it. Kate's ensemble perfectly matched the plumes worn in the bearskin caps by the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. The plume being St. Patrick's blue was selected because that is the color of the mantle and sash of the Order of St. Patrick.

The Prince and Princess of Wales helped to host a Buckingham Palace garden party just days after the coronation. Kate recycled a fan favorite, the cornflower blue dress with sheer sleeves by Elie Saab and a matching Philip Treacy hat with a flower detail that she previously wore to Royal Ascot in 2019. She accessorized with the Lola Blue topaz and diamond hoop earrings by Kiki McDonough.
