Alizee and James Middleton quietly welcomed a baby boy "a few weeks" before introducing him to the world

There’s a gene running strong in the next generation on both sides of Kate Middleton’s family!

On Friday, the Princess of Wales’ younger brother James Middleton confirmed that he and his wife, Alizee Thevenet, recently welcomed their first child and shared that the baby boy’s name is Inigo. The little one’s arrival marks the continuation of a surprising pattern because of his sex. James, Princess Kate, and their sister Pippa Middleton all had sons first: Kate and Prince William welcomed Prince George in 2013 while Pippa and her husband, James Matthews, had their son Arthur in 2018.

The Middleton siblings aren’t the only ones who have had firstborn sons, as it’s a common trend in the royal family as well. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip became first-time parents when then-Prince Charles was born in 1948, and the pattern continued with the next generation.

Princess Diana became a “boy mom” when she and Prince Charles welcomed Prince William in 1982. William arrived as Queen Elizabeth’s second grandson, as Princess Anne joined the firstborn son club when she welcomed Peter Phillips with then-husband Captain Mark Phillips in 1977.

When William and Prince Harry married and had children decades later, the cycle continued! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle became first-time parents to son Prince Archie in 2018, and the prince’s cousin Princess Eugenie would also have a son first. Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, had their son August in 2021 and doubled the boy joy with the birth of baby Ernest in May.

Of course, there have been some exceptions. Prince Andrew had no sons, while Prince Edward welcomed his daughter Lady Louise before his son James was born. Some of Prince William and Prince Harry's other cousins — including Peter and Zara — also welcomed firstborn daughters. And while Princess Beatrice welcomed her daughter Sienna in 2021, she is also a stepmother to Wolfie, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi's son from a previous relationship.

Earlier this week, James and Alizee were spotted out with a stroller in the Notting Hill section of London, signaling that their baby had been born. The couple tied the knot in September 2021 following a two-year engagement, and the James & Ella entrepreneur, 36, announced Alizee’s pregnancy in July.

On Friday, the proud dad posted the first photos of the newborn to his personal Instagram page and revealed his name.

“He has been in our lives for just a few weeks but they have been the most special of my life getting to know our beautiful baby boy 💙,” James began the caption of a three-part carousel. The photos show James holding Inigo's hand with a charm of Ella, his beloved late cocker spaniel, the infant lying in a stroller beside four of his parents' six dogs and James wearing a baby carrier as one of the pups hopped up to check out Ingio inside.

“No matter how prepared I thought I was…I was not prepared for the overwhelming emotion of meeting Inigo for the first time and the love for my darling Alizée as we became three,” he continued, revealing the child’s name.

“We have settled into our new life as parents and I’ve told him all about Ella and that if it wasn’t for her he wouldn’t be here today and that we miss her greatly. The dogs have been fantastic at welcoming their little brother into the pack (although Inka needs to know the teddybears are not all for her…) 🐾,” Princess Kate’s brother joked, referring to one of his pups.

“We would like to thank the wonderful team at Basingstoke hospital, from the very first scan to walking out the front door for the first time as three, we couldn’t have felt more supported and looked after throughout so thank you NHS 🙏,” he concluded, shouting out the care team.

The new baby makes James’ parents Carole and Michael Middleton grandparents seven times over. They are grandparents to Kate and William’s kids — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — as well as Pippa and James’ three young children — Arthur, Grace and Rose.

Little Inigo also makes Princess Kate an aunt for the sixth time! In addition to the Matthews trio, she is aunt to Prince Harry and Meghan’s son, Prince Archie, and daughter, Princess Lilibet, 2.

According to NameBerry, Inigo is of Spanish/Basque origin and means "fiery." The moniker was prominent in the 1987 film The Princess Bride, where the character Inigo Montoya (portrayed by legendary actor Mandy Patinkin) famously delivered the line, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Princess Kate and Prince William, both 41, have not shared a public comment about their new nephew.
