Even though Kate Middleton is out of the public eye right now, she’s sticking with a royal strategy that has served her well as Princess of Wales. Her focus right now is healing after her cancer diagnosis, but she reportedly refuses to get caught up in the media frenzy surrounding her.

Gareth Russell, author of Do Let’s Have Another Drink!: The Dry Wit and Fizzy Life of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, told The Sun that Kate has “a long-term vision” for her role which allows her to not “sweat the every day.” He added more color to his thoughts on the Princes of Wales’ strategy, saying, “You plan five, 10, 15 years and you don’t really let yourself get dragged into easily by the smaller details or the headlines every week.” However, Russell believes that it is easier said than done because royal life is “trickier in today’s society.

In addition to her cancer treatment, Kate has weathered the badgering of social media platforms asking her for “proof of life” and the Mother’s Day photo editing debacle. Yet Russell praised her steely nature, noting, “I also think the Princess of Wales is tough in the best way possible. I think you have to be someone who is prepared to protect your private life.” That’s the way Kate has always operated even ahead of her health crisis.

Last fall, when the Dutch translation of Omid Scobie’s book, Endgame, accused King Charles III and the Princess of Wales as the two royals who questioned the color of Prince Archie’s skin ahead of his birth, she appeared unbothered by the allegation. “It is why a lot of people who have worked with her think she is such an asset to the royal family because she has this amazing professionalism,” author Valentin Low told People last December. “She has this public image of being nice and smiley and, dare I say, innocuous,” he added. “But she is actually strong-minded, strong-willed, and prepared to fight for what she wants and what she thinks is right.”

No matter what the royal rumors are in any given month, Low believes that “Kate thinks strategically” because “she is going to be queen one day.” That’s why the “long-term interests of the monarchy and royal family” are her key focus, the rest just does not matter to her.
