She may seem unflappable but, according to Us Weekly, Kate Middleton “envies” Meghan Markle’s public persona. While the Duchess of Cambridge comes off as the picture of poise and grace, a palace insider told Us that her outward confidence belies the anxiety she feels below the surface — especially at big events. And that’s where Kate’s admiration for her sister-in-law apparently comes in. Being in front of a crowd and mingling with the people come so easily for Meghan.
Watching her in action, it’s difficult to fathom that Kate’s royal responsibilities take her outside of her comfort zone. She always seems perfectly polished, whether she’s keeping Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in line or greeting foreign dignitaries. However, putting herself out there is apparently something Kate struggles with. “Kate still finds these huge public events overwhelming,” a palace insider told Us. “She’s always been naturally shy.”

Sure, Kate never fails to charm “everyone with her ability to paste a huge smile on her face.” But that smile represents a lot of work on Kate’s part. “She knows she has a responsibility to be front and center, given that one day these events will be in honor of her husband. It’s something she’ll have to work at for the rest of her life,” the source shared, adding, “Truth be told, she envies sister-in-law Meghan’s ease in front of crowds.”
Of course, Kate’s royal responsibilities will expand even more when she becomes queen consort — an eventuality she’s already begun preparing herself for. “Kate’s been taking on new responsibilities little by little over the last few years, so it won’t be a shock when the time comes,” royal expert Rebecca Long told Us back in April. And, according to another source, Queen Elizabeth II is also working directly with the Duchess to help her get into the right headspace for the job. “She’s really taken Kate under her wing. The two of them will often spend hours discussing royal life and the future of the monarchy,” said the source.
Perhaps spending more time with Meghan is helping Kate tackle her public anxiety. Now that the near-constant rumors the two are squabbling have finally started to subside, the women seem to be growing closer. Over the weekend, they shared a carriage (along with Prince Harry and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall) at the annual Trooping the Colour celebration in honor of the Queen’s birthday. “Meghan was chatting to the Duchess of Cambridge, and they were getting on well,” Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, told People.
And, for what it’s worth, both women radiated confidence. So, maybe they really are rubbing off on each other — Kate’s regal aptitude coupled with Meghan’s easy charm? Sounds like a power dynamic to us.
