Kate Middleton and Prince William Change Social Media Photos Ahead of Staple on Royal Calendar

The Prince and Princess of Wales are continuing a digital tradition ahead of November 11

Kate Middleton and Prince William are refreshing their social media feeds for an important reason.

On Thursday, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ communication teams updated their Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) pages ahead of Remembrance Day. The solemn holiday is marked each year on November 11 and honors those from the U.K. and Commonwealth nations who died in wars.

It’s become a digital tradition for the British royals to change their social media pages to reflect Remembrance Day, switching their profile pictures to set the tone. After about a week, the pages usually return to their previous photos.

Prince William and Princess Kate’s new profile photo is a shot of them from the 2019 Festival of Remembrance, an annual event at Royal Albert Hall to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in conflict. In typical style for the service, the couple wore black with symbolic red poppy pins.

Each November, the floral pins become a piece of the royals' wardrobe. The poppy has been used since 1921 to commemorate military members who have died in wars.

The red flower is primarily associated with the U.K. and Commonwealth countries for Remembrance Day. The poppy is also a symbol of sacrifice and remembrance in the United States around Nov. 11 (Veterans Day), though it’s also worn for Memorial Day in May.

The Prince and Princess of Wales also replaced their cover photo on X, swapping a photo of the finalists for Prince William’s 2023 Earthshot Prize (which had its awards in Singapore this week) for a picture of the Field of Remembrance, showing poppies on crosses. The picture might look familiar, as the couple rotated in the same cover photo for Remembrance Day last year.

They’re not the only members of the British royal family who have shaken up their pages — King Charles and Queen Camilla have done the same.

As seen across X, Instagram and Facebook (where they have a combined 25 million followers), courtiers for the King, 74, and Queen, 76, changed their profile picture from a festive coronation snap to a throwback from a previous Remembrance Day.

The icon now is a picture of the royals attending a Remembrance Day Service at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Canada in 2009.

According to Gert’s Royals, it might be a favorite shot, as the couple have featured it on social media for Remembrance Day “multiple times” previously, including last year.

Similar to the Prince and Princess of Wales, the royal couple’s communication team changed their cover picture on X and Facebook to a flood of red ceramic poppies with the words “Lest We Forget.” The shot seemed to be from the famous installation that filled the Tower of London’s moat in 2014. Each of the 888,246 flowers represented a British military fatality during the war, Historic Royal Palaces said.

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s avatar had been royal photographer Chris Jackson’s instantly iconic shot of the crowned couple looking out at the crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The spot previously showed a picture of The Mall in London lined with Union Jack flags and packed with people. The flags hint that the image is from Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022, as The Mall was decorated with the flags of Commonwealth countries (plus Britain’s tricolors) on King Charles and Queen Camilla’s May 6 coronation day.

King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate are expected to continue tradition and commemorate Remembrance Day in the U.K. this weekend. They, along with other members of the royal family, will attend the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall on Saturday and the National Service of Remembrance, also known as Remembrance Sunday, at The Cenotaph war memorial in London.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are already marking Veteran’s Day across the pond.

On Wednesday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell Foundation shared news that the two “spent the morning with veteran and active duty service members and their loved ones at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, California.” Later in the evening, they headed out again for the grand opening of the Navy SEAL Foundation’s Warrior Fitness Program West Coast facility in San Diego, a few hours' drive from home in Montecito, California.

Meghan, 42, and Harry, 39, a former captain in the British Army and veteran of the Afghanistan war, have regularly marked Veterans Day and Remembrance Day since stepping back from their royal roles in 2020. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex both poignantly wore red poppy pins for their second surprise engagement on Wednesday night.
