When Kate Middleton & Prince William Become Queen & King They Want Their Kids to Have 'as Normal a Start as Possible'

They may be gearing up to one day assume power of the British monarchy, but Kate Middleton and Prince William strive for normalcy when it comes to their three children: Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 19 months. A royal source claims that it’s because Kate and William are so acutely aware of their children’s abundance of privilege — and future responsibility — that the couple tries to keep things as down-to-earth as they can.

According to People, a recent outing was the perfect representation of how Kate and William strive to raise their royal kids. The afternoon in question took place in Norwich in October when the family went to watch William’s favorite soccer team Aston Villa. “It was natural and lovely,” says the insider. “That’s just how they are. They know what’s coming [as they near the throne] and want to give their kids as normal a start as possible.”

Doing so will inevitably get more difficult as Kate and William move closer to their eventual roles as Queen and King. Already, they’re taking on more responsibility and assuming more visible places beside the queen — for example, helping Her Majesty welcome visiting dignitaries at last week’s Diplomatic Reception.

So far, it seems as though Kate and William are managing to strike an ideal balance between the nature of being royal and giving their kids a relatively normal upbringing. Just yesterday, a glimpse of the Cambridges’ annual Christmas card photo was leaked online. And, well, it could have been any family of five posing for holiday portraits. The couple has also revealed recently that their kids like quote-unquote normal kid things like singing, cartwheels, unicorns, and tractors.

It would also seem that Kate and William have been striving more in recent months, as their position in the role family starts to shift, to share a more relaxed side of themselves with the public. Earlier this week, they took to social media to post a clip from their BBC holiday special with Mary Berry in which they compete to make the best roulade.

Aside from getting adorably competitive with each other, Kate and Will revealed a bit of very relatable information on camera about their courtship. When asked by Berry if he ever cooks for her, Kate confessed, “University days, he used to cook all sorts of meals. I think that was when he was trying to impress me, Mary.”
