Before Prince Harry got married, there was always an unspoken assumption that his one-day wife would be super-chummy with the Duchess of Cambridge. Things clearly haven’t unfolded that way, and now sources are saying Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle will never be best friends. Wondering why? Let us walk you through this latest update on the women’s purported relationship — and why there’s nothing wrong with the duchesses choosing to be friendly as opposed to BFFs.
In the new issue of Us Weekly, a royal source reportedly claimed that Kate and Meghan “will never be best friends, but they’re civil.” According to another source cited in the issue, the distance between the women has a lot to do with the fact that they’re “from two totally different worlds.” It makes sense: In addition to having very different upbringings, Kate and Meghan are quite literally from two parts of the world with a lot of physical distance between them.

As Us Weekly previously reported, Meghan feels as though — being the quote-unquote outsider — she is held to unfair standards. “Meghan has this sense of isolation being in the U.K., subject to cruel British media,” an insider said. “Her hands are tied and she isn’t allowed to defend herself. It has been very difficult.”
Having said all of that, it’s important to point out that just because the women aren’t best friends doesn’t mean they’re feuding. In fact, one of the sources points out that Meghan has been “nothing but warm and polite to everyone in Harry’s family.” Furthermore, any construed tension between the duchesses due to this new report could simply be a matter of semantics. The source claims they’ll never be best friends. They didn’t say the women aren’t friends at all. They didn’t even say the women weren’t close. It simply stated that they’ll never be best friends.
And even if Kate and Meghan more friendly than they are friends, that’s OK too. Every relationship isn’t going to be a spill-your-guts, laugh-so-hard-you-cry type of relationship. Even if these women never become that kind of friends, it doesn’t mean that the relationship they do have is unhealthy.
