At the risk of sounding trite, the Duchess of Cambridge looked as pretty as a picture on Monday at a Royal Photographic Society workshop — but while it may not have been readily apparent, she made a controversial fashion choice. Curious? It seems Kate Middleton broke Queen Elizabeth’s royal rule about wedges. Oh yes, friends; this is a thing, and we are going to give you the sartorial 4-1-1.

Let’s start with Kate’s ensemble since, c’mon, it was lovely and so on-the-nose for the season. Her dress, a breezy paisley-print number, was decidedly unproblematic. It was light and airy, ideal for summer, and the blue and lavender color scheme complemented Kate’s complexion. Similarly, Kate’s accessorizing presented no issues. She wore her hair in loose waves, keeping her jewelry at a minimum with a pair of dainty chandelier earrings. You had to look south of Kate’s ankles to see where things went, well, south. Kate opted for a pair of nude Castaner wedges — the same shoes she wore to last month’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Are they cute? We certainly think so. Did Meghan Markle wear a pair almost just like them during a trip to Australia? You betcha. Does any of that matter to the Queen? According to one source, nope!

The trouble with Kate’s affinity for wedges can be traced back to 2015 when, at the time, the Queen reportedly made it clear the style of shoe wasn’t acceptable. “The Queen isn’t a fan of wedged shoes,” a source told Vanity Fair. “She really doesn’t like them and it’s well known among the women in the family.” Back then, Kate seemed to switch to high heel pumps in order to appease the royal matriarch.

The fact that Kate has begun wearing wedges again suggests that either the Queen has lightened up, Kate has grown more comfortable asserting herself or both. It could also be indicative of the fact that the Queen has much larger issues to deal with than micro-managing the footwear the rest of her royal family decides to wear.

Since Kate was attending the Royal Photographic Society workshop after being passed on the distinguished royal patronage by the Queen herself, we’re inclined to think Her Majesty must not be too worried about Kate’s wedges.
