Family is what you decide. There’s no blueprint for the perfect, loving, happy family — and that’s what makes the world so beautiful! Kate Hudson has what she recently called a “patchwork family,” which is not only three kids with three different men, but also a connection to her two exes’ kids as well. It all adds up to one big, beautiful, blended family! In a new interview, she opened up about how she welcomes everyone in her home to the benefit of her kids.

The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star opened up about her unique life in a new cover story with PEOPLE. She is mom to son Ryder, 20, with Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, son Bingham, 12, with Muse rocker Matt Bellamy, and daughter Rani Rose, 5, with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.

“We are very connected, and we are very close,” Hudson said of her exes and their families. (Robinson is also dad to Cheyenne, 14, and Bellamy is dad to Lovella, 2). “Love can change form. It’s interesting when you have that modern family; there’s so much love for all the kids.”

“I think the thing that’s so unique about my life is that in this very patchwork family, we all have figured it out … The kids feel like they have this huge family,” the “Talk About Love” singer continued. She explained that Rani and her exes’ daughters “are like sisters.”

Hudson added, “There is something that has been able to be nurtured in our family that is personally what I think is, it’s very rare.”

And they truly are a family; Hudson even watched Lovella for her parents recently. “I’m sitting with all the kids and I’m like, I am so happy we have this real family unit that’s big. It’s beautiful,” she gushed. “Everybody’s open to it and understands it’s the most mature thing for the kids. And you can see it in them — they feel loved, they feel protected, they feel safe.”

Hudson, who is recently her debut album Glorious tomorrow, has talked about co-parenting before. “It might not look traditional from the outside, but on the inside, I feel like we’re killing it,” she told The Sunday Times in 2022. “The unit that I’ve created with three children with three different fathers is a seriously strong unit, and it’s ours.”

She added, “For me it’s like, you loved this person. That doesn’t just go away, but you can re-establish a different kind of love. You can have an amazing time with an ex-partner because you’re really only focused on the love of your child.”

One area of her family Hudson still struggles with, though? Her relationship with her dad Bill Hudson, who left her mom Goldie Hawn when Hudson was a toddler. She has been estranged from her father for years, but things might be changing. When CBS News asked about her relationship with her dad last month, she said, “I don’t really have one.”

The Almost Famous star went on, “But it’s like, I, you know, it’s warming up. There’s warming up with this all happening … but it’ll be whatever it will be, you know. I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. It’s like, I just want him to be happy.”

These blended celebrity families make it look easy!
